High Achievement Through Procrastination

Stanford University's John Perry was the 2011 Ig Nobel literature honoree for his article about the Theory of Structured Procrastination. Perry holds that procrastinators can still become respected high achievers by working on important things as a way of avoiding spending time on even more important tasks.

Naturally Perry had something slightly less important to do than attend the Ig Nobel ceremony, but he left his theory to speak for him, as originally written in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

"If all the procrastinator had left to do was to sharpen some pencils, no force on Earth could get him to do it. However, the procrastinator can be motivated to do difficult, timely, and important tasks, as long as these tasks are a way of not doing something more important."

The bris happened without issue this morning, though oddly we somehow managed to get not a single picture of the event.
Kvater was perfomed by our friends Shimon and Rochel Riss.
Kisay shell eliyahu was done by my brother-in-law Mark Galec. He also stayed on hand to give the baby sugar water and wine.
The sandek was my brother-in-law Jonathan Kepets who came in from NY the night before.
Rabbi Rosenberg and Rabbi Block did a round robin on the naming brochot.
And the baby's name is:
Aryeh Asher Bierman
The Aryeh if for my Mother's Father. He was named Yehuda, but so is my wife's father and my father-in-law is still alive. The name Aryeh (Lion) is derived from a pasuk in tanach, in which Yaakov blesses his son Yehuda, comparing him to a lion and so can be reasonably used as an alternative.
The second name means happiness (or some version of the word happy depending on exact translation bias) and is the name of my Father's Father.
I have fond memories of both my grandfathers.

Thank God, Aryeh is dong just fine.

Hello one and all (yes, there is a grand list in the BCC field),
We have been very busy the last two days, so only now am I getting a chance to announce to the word that Debbie and I brought home from the hospital our third son.

The new addition was born at 3:06pm on Monday the second of May, 2011.
Thank God, Mommy and baby are fine (Aba does not even get a nod or a worry). The labor was as uneventful as could be hoped for, and relatively short too.
Stats for those who are interested:
5lbs, 11ozs and 20 inches long.

Hes a little thing, but healthy and strong and when he needs attention, loud.

I'm still in a de-cluttering mode these days (more on that soon), so I was intrigued by this resource, which arrived this morning via Mrs. Folders.

While primarily a trade group for "professional organizers," the National Study Group on Chroic Disorganization site has some handy documents and links to help with identifying and solving pathological problems with clutter and hoarding.

If you can tolerate the site's gruesome ardor for PDFs, you'll find some informative and eye-opening stuff. From their fact sheets page:

Would you believe that you can make a cup of espresso or cafe
americano in 30 seconds flat and it would be the best cup of coffee
you ever tasted? Would you believe that you only have to spend around
$30 on the coffee maker that produced the perfect cup of coffee? And
that a combination espresso/coffee maker is so portable you can take
it to your office with you? Could the perfect cup of coffee come from
such a modest-looking device as the Aeropress ®?

You may wonder what's so novel about the Aeropress, this simple
looking one-cup coffee maker that makes better coffee than a $2000
espresso machine or a $10 simple plastic cone and paper filter.

Most similar to a French press system, the Aeropress uses total
immersion and pressure, but the Aeropress has a separate filter and
plunger, and the filter is on the bottom, where ground coffee is more
evenly exposed to the pressure of the plunger. Cone shaped filter
systems tend to "burn" the ground coffee in the center of the cone tip
while under-brewing the coffee on the edges of the cone.

A truely good cup of coffee is not made with boiling water as a
temperature above about 210 degrees Fahrenheit, produces a bitter
taste. The Aeropress uses water at about 165 to 200, depending on
which coffee connoisseur you ask.

The process of coffee making is much faster using the Aeropress,
taking only 30 seconds, not counting the time it takes to heat the
water or grind the coffee. Place 2 - 3 scoops of ground coffee, pour
in water to the measured level on the filter, stir with the plunger
for 10 seconds, and then press the plunger for 10 - 20 seconds. Add
additional hot (not boiling) water for regular coffee or cafe
americano, or drink as is for espresso strength.

Grind size and type of coffee you use are to your taste. Espresso
grind is not necessary. If you don't like the taste of espresso
coffee, you don't need to use an Espresso bean. You can make a good
cup of coffee with Folger's or any store brand coffee. The Aeropress
makes it taste better.

If you choose to save the coffee for later use to make iced coffee,
cappuccino, latte, or other beverage, don't add water to what you have
made. Keep the coffee in concentrate form in the refrigerator. Because
you have not used boiling water, the taste will remain fresh for a few
days. You can also use this concentrated coffee to add to cake or ice
cream recipes.

Do I think the Aeropress makes the perfect cup of coffee? I think it
can.

Perfect coffee is in the tastebuds of the taster. The Aeropress
recognizes this and perhaps that is why the coffee maker is so lenient
with the grind and type of coffee you use.

If the taste of Folgers is what you like, you can make a perfect cup
of Folgers to your taste.

If you love French Roast, you can buy it fresh roasted, grind it
fresh, and make your perfect espresso style French Roast or French
Roast americano.

You get to experiment with different beans and different grinds. And
doing this, I believe you can make a perfect cup of coffee with the
Aeropress.

The Bryant Park Project, March 4, 2008 · Hacker Josh Kleinwowed attendees this weekend at TED — the Technology, Entertainment and Design conference — with his "crow vending machine," a device that gives the birds peanuts for depositing a coin. It's all part of Klein's plan to train crows to save human lives.

Just wrapping up in Monterey, Calif., TED gives inventors 18 minutes to wow an audience of people who each paid $6,000 to be blown away by new ideas. Klein's game plan? To explain "why crows are better than flying monkeys, and how you can teach them to do your bidding."

Klein says this all started when he used a modified version of Skinnerian training to teach his cat to use the toilet, and it worked really well. That made him think that he might be able to use the method with crows. The first inklings that he would work with crows came about 10 years ago, at a cocktail party, when he argued that harnessing the birds to do something useful would be a much better plan for his native Seattle, plagued by crows, than mass slaughter.

In the first two steps of his four-step experiment, Klein says he provides crows with coins, peanuts and the vending machine, in order to get them used to the materials. Then he provides the birds only with coins, and in frustration they bang around until the coin gets in the machine's slot. That introduces the next step, when the machine dispenses a peanut as a reward for each coin. In the fourth step, he gives the birds nothing. But the crows see that coins have been spread on the ground near the machine. This reveals what's special about crows. Squirrels, for example, look at the box a half-dozen times, then disappear to play in traffic. Crows make the connection: Pick up the coin, put it in the box and receive a reward.

How will Klein extrapolate his findings for the greater good? His central idea is that certain species have adapted to human environments. We try to kill off adaptive pests like roaches, rats and crows, but we're breeding them to be parasites. Roaches are immune to poison, rats have responded with rapid breeding. But a better goal, Klein says, is to seek an interspecies harmony. You could train crows to sort electronics, he says. They could pick up trash. And, Klein says, because the birds can distinguish individual human faces, they could help with search and rescue. "Don't hate the crows," Klein says. "Just let them save you."

Aah, the old "wire is wire" debate, in which demanding audiophiles insist or deny that you need premium cables to get decent sound.

The latest ammo comes from a couple of wisacres at Audioholics, who did a blind listening test of of a high-end system where the only difference was the speaker connection -- $100 Monster cables, premium Belden wire and straightened coat hangers. By and large, the panel couldn't tell the difference.

You could print out your online recipes and slap them in a binder along with your index card collection. Or you could use TasteBook to create a professional-looking cookbook.

The site just launched a public beta. You can save recipes from partner sites including Epicurious and add your own. When you're done, you can order a printed copy of a 100-recipe book for $35. If you have fewer than 100 recipes, you still have to pay $35, but you get a credit toward future recipe books.

for some reason, computer controllable thermostats are pretty freakin' expensive. i found a reference to a 1-wire thermostat in this(mirror) sample senior project on home automation. it turns out that dallas semiconductor put one together a while back as an application for their tini platform. (web-application server on a chip). the write-up has since vanished from their site, but i found it thatnks to archive.org. the thermostat used to run about $50, and a similar model still seems to be produced. the 1-wire interface is pretty simple - maxim's tini board to control it: not so much. just using the 1-wire interface with an inexpensive thermostat and controlling from a pc seems pretty viable to me. just in case, i mirrored the 1-wire interface schematics here.

Organized Home has a few great ways to get rid of clutter in your home or at work. For most of us, clutter is just the result of bad habits and indecision.

The first method described attempts to force decision making in a very simple way:

The Four-Box method forces a decision, item by item. To apply it, gather three boxes and a large trash can. Label the boxes, "Put Away", "Give Away/Sell" and "Storage." Items to be thrown away belong in the trash can.

What I like about having these 'clutter destinations' is that you can keep them in your work area and use as immediate inboxes. Instead of just the one IN box, you have the three [plus trash] where you place items that come in.

This is very similar to GTD's system where you take items from your inbox and put them into reference, projects or someday/maybe items. However, the latter would be the equivalent of keeping clutter in your home.

Instead of just one inbox, for your growing clutter, you keep a series that force action immediately:

- Storage/Reference
- Work/Prokects
- Trash
etc.

Google Answers was a great service I used and recommended. Sadly it was closed. Many of the free-lance researches from Google Answers moved to a new independently owned site, Uclue, that offers a similar service. You ask a question, announce a price you think an answer is worth, and if a top-notch researcher thinks your fee is fair, they will research your question. Questions can be quickies worth $5, or more complicated queries costing $200.

In my experience their answers are solid and reliable. You can always ask for clarifications. As with Google Answers, the results are public. That means it pays to search the site for previous similar questions. It also means that your answer won't be confidential. (Indeed. The answer to a question I commissioned on Uclue was Slashdotted.)

If you want advice, go to the free and free-wheeling Yahoo Answers. You'll get your money's worth. If you want help on a particular question that the exact right person can answer quickly, I think Ask Metafilter is by far the best guru (and it is free for members). But if what you need is some real research and serious sleuthing, the kind of answer that is not just sitting in someone's head, I believe your best bet will be Uclue.

Figure how long it might take you to answer your own question -- if you could at all -- and you'll see that Uclue answers are a real bargain.

i saw this last month in popular science, but it wasn't online for a while. this (nearly) all-in-one brewery was built by [john carnett]. it does everything but requires malt extract for now. it boils wort, cools it for fermenting, delivers the brew to the kegs and most interestingly to me - uses cold plate cooling to cool the beer just before it exits the tap. i'm pretty sure they're using peltier junctions, but i'd like to know for sure. props to [nate] for inadvertently reminding me of the thing when he sent in this effort to brew beer inside a pumpkin!

Some of the 2007 awards have gone to inventions that seem just short of miraculous and the Electro Needle Biomedical Sensor Array comes close. This is a small patch device with electro-chemically treated probes. When the patch is applied to the skin, it has the ability to ascertain chemical readings present in a patient's blood without having to withdraw any blood. Thus, readings such as "carbohydrates, electrolytes, lipids, enzymes, toxins, proteins, viruses, and can be detected in a patient's blood or interstitial cellular fluid." No more for "good" veins? You mean no more vials and vials and vials taken? One great step for medicine; 15 great steps for the sick folks in the emergency room. Developed by the Sandia National Laboratories.

Algorithm draws on millions of images to seamlessly fill blanks in photographs

August 17, 2007 The advent of digital photography has opened up a new world of image editing possibilities including the ability to fill-in blanks or replace unwanted parts of an image. A new algorithm devised by James Hayes and Alexei A. Efros of Carnegie Mellon University facilitates this process by drawing on a huge database of more than a million images from the World Wide Web in order to seamlessly fill in the missing areas of incomplete photographs.

There could be many reasons for an image to feature an undesirable blank area - a patch of bright light that needed to be cropped out or perhaps a shadow, a person or an object ruined an otherwise perfect shot.

The algorithm tackles this problem by completing a given image in a number of different ways leaving the user to select the one which is deemed most suitable. This can be achieved without the user having to label the image fragments being used, or for that matter, offer any direction at all.

'Holes' in images are 'patched' as suitable image fragments are found and re-arranged to complete the image in a manner that is claimed to be semantically valid. That is, the patched area is consistent with the rest of the image. Hays and Efros claim that their algorithm is a means to restore data missing from an image that 'should have been there'. Existing methods of filling such blank areas have largely involved drawing image fragments from other parts of the same picture. This algorithm is quite unique in that it draws from an exterior database and also in the means by which it achieves this.

August 21, 2007 Aerodynamics is now viewed by Formula 1 teams as the single most important piece of race car design the rules allow them to control. A good aerodynamic setup makes an F1 car slippery in a straight line, maximizes acceleration and top speed, and provides huge amounts of downforce to mash the car's tyres into the tarmac and add extra grip in the corners. Massive money is spent on tweaking the wings and body shape for that elusive perfect flow of air. Toyota's Head of Aerodynamics, Mark Gillan, explains further in the second part of Panasonic Toyota Racing's 'Inside a Formula 1 Car' series.

If you've ever stuck your hand out of a car window on the freeway, you'll understand that as speed increases, the flow of air around the car becomes a significant force to push against. Imagine the strength of that force at a Formula One car's top track speed of around 360kmh.

First and foremost, aerodynamics is the science of manipulating and making use of air flow. In Formula 1, ferociously high speeds mean the air is a formidable force and it can be used to the car's advantage.

Put simply, the bigger the frontal area of an object, the more wind resistance it will encounter, so a bigger object will travel slower than a smaller object with the same amount of power to propel it.

Confederate's Renovatio – the handmade American streetbike goes modular

If you thought Confederate's previous motorcycles, the Wraith and Hellcat, were outrageous to look at, wait 'til you see the company's latest project. The virtually frameless Renovatio takes minimalism and modular design to the next level and flags a bold future direction for this iconoclastic New Orleans-based streetbike manufacturer.

Confederate, in their short history, have made it their business to stand apart from the crowd, delivering high-end hand-made streetbikes with industrial-retro-meets-goth looks, fat v-twin engines and no consideration at all for the racetrack performance that seems to drive most of the motorcycle industry these days. The company's Wraith and Hellcat have sold well for a boutique brand, most famously to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt – these eye-popping bikes are among the few vehicles on the planet that can legitimately match the world's biggest movie stars in the head-turning stakes.

The Renovatio concept is set to take the company's avant-garde look a big step forward. Confederate's conceptual design team leader, Ed Jacobs, has released his vision for the company's next major model, which the company expects to refine and push to production by sometime in 2008.

The Renovatio (latin for "rebirth") retains the Wraith's carbon-fiber girder fork concept and tractor-style seat, at least in some sketches, but introduces a new modular design language that all but does away with a traditional frame. Swingarm, seat, tank and front-end are all pretty much mounted to the 1686cc v-twin engine – and in some incarnations the Renovatio's seat is suspended in midair from the tank.

Confederate intend for the Renovatio to be a modular design platform – hence the different seat and tank options shown in the design sketches and the large circular mount points located all over the vehicle. At the heart of the beast is a 90-degree v-twin powerplant derived from General Motors' LS7 7.0 litre V8. It should put out around 150hp in the normally aspirated version, or closer to 190hp with the optional supercharger. Either way, those are enormous numbers for a big twin and the Renovatio will be suitably overpowered for the street, particularly given its lightweight carbon fiber/aluminum construction.

Pricing will be at the premium end – The Wraith and Hellcat both sell for well over US$50,000, reflecting the thousands of hours of work that goes into their construction and the exotic materials they're made from.

The Renovatio is an exciting concept from Confederate and we look forward to seeing how these CAD sketches translate into a road-going production motorcycle.

Why buy a sprinkler controller when you can make your own. And if you are making your own anyway, might as well make the DIY Sprinkler Controller better than any off the shelf models available. At least that is what Arek Jankowski decided to do!

"Arek combines a wireless router, NAS, and a USB Bit Whacker to take control of his sprinkler system. Reflash the router and NAS with linux, add some PHP and USB controlled phototriacs to the sprinkler controller and control it all from the comfort of your PC. I wanted to have a way of controlling both systems from my PC. The idea was to create something that would allow me to remotely turn on and off the sprinklers for each zone without going down to the basement to set it up on the Hunter controller or without going down to the garage to open the faucet. I have a wireless access point set up in the house for my wife's laptop and this is what I also used in this project. The project involved hardware, software and a little bit of plumbing work. Impossible Illustration Brought to Life

What happens when you try to take an 2D illustration of an impossible 3D construction and turn it into a real-world sculpture? We figured that it would create a dangerous rift in the space time continuum bringing about an endless solar winter that would engulf our planet in darkness. Luckily in the case of this unusual Escher Waterfall Sculpture none of that occurred.

Instead we discovered that by closing one eye, and viewing this sculpture from just the right angle we could bring the amazing work of M.C. Escher to life. Of course a casual glance with binocular vision destroys the entire illusion... but hey it's still a very cool little sculpture that really captures the detail of the original Waterfall woodcut.

So, if your cell phone has no other numbers stored in its memory, make sure it has these numbers:

Local Fire Department - Because you may need them and it may not be enough of an emergency to call 911. Very good for those pesky cat-stuck-in-tree situations
Local Police Department or Law Enforcement - Same reason as above.
Nearby Hospital(s) - These are great when a loved one isn't home hours after they said they'd be. A lot easier to have them preloaded into your phone instead of sifting frantically through the yellow pages!
ICE (In Case of Emergency) - If you're ever in an accident and are incapacitated or killed, the authorities who find you will likely look for this entry in your cell phone numbers (and call it). A spouse or relative capable of making decisions on your behalf would be best here.
Taxi Company Dispatch - Just in case you find yourself stuck on the side of the road (or maybe you've had a few drinks). This is especially helpful in the latter situation since you won't have to sheepishly ask the bartender to call you a cab.
Water and Power Department - In case your water or power ever get shut off and you'd like to know why (especially if it's the power and your regular phones don't work).
Doctor and/or Pediatrician - Another one for you parents. When little Junior suddenly breaks out in hives and you'd like to speak to somebody (but don't want to spend the cheddar on the emergency room just yet), this is another one that's good to have. Also, these can be very difficult to locate in a time of stress, so record it next time you have the chance.

Poison Control - So, you think you little Timmy might've just ingested two big mouthfuls of Pine-Sol? Not sure if you should take him to the hospital or use his sweat to clean the floor? These people generally answer very quickly and are very helpful - a must for the parents.
Animal Control - This isn't just for mountain lions and wild bore who show up on your back stoop. Maybe your neighbor's dog's brain made a wrong turn at Albuquerque and now he thinks little Maddy is a kabob of some sort. You'll obviously want the tranquilizer-toting folks in coats to come down and diffuse the situation, pronto.
Coworker or Boss - Because you don't want to call the company switchboard to tell them you ran out of gas on the Interstate and managed to wet your pants in the process. Shoot for a direct line or cell phone.
Your Next-Door Neighbor - Hear about a house fire on the news? Give old Ted next door a ring and have him poke his head out to make sure your house is still standing (and offer to return the favor).
Tow Truck Company - Preferably one that will drive long distances if need be. Other than that, this one needs no explanation.
Car Insurance Carrier/Broker - The first people you should call if you're in an accident (unless somebody is hurt, then you call them second). They'll tell you want to write down and if you need the police. Another number you don't want to go fishing through your Costanza Wallet for if you can help it.
Pizza/Chinese/All-Night Take-out Food - Because once you find a good place that's open late, that's a number you keep and call often.

Cheap, mini-tool storage

The Viewtainer is an inexpensive, flexible plastic tube with a rubbery cap at both ends. Originally, they were intended to hold small parts (screws, nuts, bolts, etc.). On one end the rubber cap has a slash in it, so when you squeeze the tube, you can dump the parts out. Although these Viewtainers may work well for storing parts, I've found that one of the larger Viewtainers, which is about 8" x 3", is an awesome mini-toolkit container that's easy to access and stash. It's amazing how many different useful (and in some cases, full-size) tools, you can fit into such a tiny container: screwdrivers, sockets, specialty bits, pliers, mini-saws, tire irons, flashlights, and on. Atwood Mini Tools

Keychain-size, steel pocket utensils

The beauty of these tools is they feel like a fetish item in your hand and, due to their size, you can always have them with you. They're handmade by Peter Atwood and have incredible strength because he uses a specialty stainless steel made via a powder metallurgy process ("The powder is compressed under significant force to a homogenous, solid state and the steel is rolled to required stock size. Molecules are uniform, inclusions of impurities are insignificant"). Both of my EDC knives -- a Swiss Army Cybertool and a SOG Multi Tool -- have slightly bent tips on the main blades because I tried to open or pry something I shouldn't have. That will never happen with the Mini Son of Prything I carry in my pocket or my Prybaby. The trend in tools is to include more and more features. Sigg Aluminum Water Bottles Non-plastic beverage containers

These bottles are a great solution for anyone looking to get away from plastic. In the last few years, studies have suggested that using plastic bottles may be harmful to your health. For instance, plastic bottles made of polycarbonate (#7 recycle code) contain a substance called bisphenol-A (BPA), which acts as an endocrine disrupter that mimics estrogen and has been linked to aneuploidy, adipogenesis, and other scary problems with funny names. Found in plastics with recycle codes 1-5, phthalates (the chemical that softens plastic) can be carcinogenic and act as endocrine disrupters, too. Even water standing at room temperature in a plastic bottle can leach phthalates from a bottle, not to mention a bottle that goes through temperature changes throughout a day. Granted there's been great debate over all these studies and whether the levels of leached phthalates in the average plastic bottle are really high enough to merit health concerns. Either way, just think about the toxic byproducts of plastic production: dioxin (a carcinogen) and plastic waste. Enormous amounts of plastic waste from all those bottles that aren't recycled create equally enormous vortexes of plastic garbage in various oceans, where they wreak havoc on marine life. Moving away from plastic is healthier for the planet. The Sigg bottles are just a tad heavier than their plastic counterparts. Stanley Tripod Flashlight Portable, hands-free LED lighting

I replaced my D battery Mag-Light with this small LED light that only needs AA batteries. I get whiter light, longer life, and more intensity. Tripod lights have always been great tools (I work at Amazon, so I see a lot of gear). The problem with the traditional ones is they get very hot, use lot of battery power, and burn out fast. Stanley's tripod light - the first LED version - takes all the advantages of LED and combines it with the convenience of a fold up stand.

I have already used it for a variety of household projects since I bought it last year. The best use has been to install dimmers. Usually I'd have to do this during the day or ask my wife to hold the flashlight. Not that you adults can't have one also, I mean we all deserve a little bit of fun in our lives. Forget forking out for one of those proprietary wireless displays, as Teq AV/IT's WID110 enables any ole display or projector to receive video signals sans wires so long as it understands VGA. The wireless gateway / receiver "enables multiple computers to stream video to a screen without any cables," and allows presenters to carry around a few small pieces of hardware rather than a dedicated monitor. Notably, the unit plays nice with 802.11b/g, outputs at 1,280 x 768, supports Windows XP / Vista / CE and OS X, is password protected, and even handles video clips in MPEG formats. Reportedly, you can look forward to a 250-foot range outside and a 150-foot range whilst indoors, and while there's no pricetag readily available, we don't envision such a luxury coming without a noticeable premium.

Twinkling coffee table

There's been fun buzz around Microsoft's $10K Surface table, but if you're truly in the market for interactive furniture there are other less expensive (though still expensive) pieces out there for you to consider. Among them is this interactive LED table created in partnership between Evilmadscientist.com and Becausewecan.org.

LEDs inside the table are only activated by motion (setting a glass on the table, reaching for something, or the swishing of the cat's tail). Whatever the action, areas of this table light up when something moves over the top of it. Without motion the lights quiet to a slight enchanting twinkle.

When fully active, the entire pool of 480 super-bright white LEDs uses a total of 35 watts, which is less energy than a single common household light bulb. Using a network of 32 active and passive near-infrared optical sensors, it detects motion above the table and changes in ambient light. Made of fully analog circuits, the light patterns move outwards from your motion, glowing stronger the closer the movement is. It works in full sunlight or total darkness.

The table is made of 100% sustainable wood and water-based finishes, is 62" long by 31" wide by 18" high, and comes with either a glass or plastic top. Well-crafted wood lattice underneath, spanning the side waves, forms a sturdy shelf for storage.

The car is reported to have a range of 120+ miles on a single charge, speeds up to 80 miles per hour, and acceleration of 0-60 in 6.0 seconds. According to the press release, "The Mini Cooper Frame is produced by Mini Cooper in Oxford England, and the conversion to all-lithium currently takes place in North Carolina at Hybrid's Mooresville plant."

I love announcements like this. I think fun and sexy cars like the Mini and the Tesla are just what the auto industry needs to get people excited about the potential of electric cars. No word about the cost, though. Hopefully it will be affordable...

The Mini is incredibly fun to drive as it is...I can only imagine what an electric engine will do for its performance. You can currently rent a non-electric one from ZipCar, it will be interesting to see if car sharing companies hop on this as a great way to introduce people to these cars.

The MINI family is getting a new big brother. The MINI Clubman ($TBA) retains the trademark styling and agile handling, but gains new proportions, split-rear doors and a passenger-side suicide door. i'm a wee bit of a coffee geek. this roaster was built by [dreamroast]. it's a highly modified of version of the roaster that i've been using for the last year or so. a convection oven up top provides the primary heat source, while the beans are spun around in the roast chamber below. a pair of thermocouples let you know what's going on inside the chamber. when the roast is done, pop the top, dump the beans into the drawer, and a fan mounted below cools them to room temperature in about a minute. it was put up for a home roaster building contest - you might be interested in the other entries.

This whole thing started with the idea of monitoring the moisture of the soil in my garden so I would know when to water it. (It's actually my girlfriend's garden, but it's in my backyard... don't ask.)

I figured I could measure the resistance between two probes and get an idea of the moisture content from that. So I set up a little "Test Unit" by filling a flower pot with moist soil and measured the resistance between two nickels (I chose nickel because it doesn't corrode easily) and got about 2K Ohms. Wondering if temperature would affect the measurement, I put the "Test Unit" in the refrigerator overnight and the measurement went up to about 3.5K Ohms (did the soil loose some moisture overnight?) Next I put it in direct sun light for several hours to heat it up and the measurement went down to about 1.5K Ohms. Sure enough, not only does temperature affect the reading by approximately 7.5% per Degree C, but it appears that moist soil (at least the sample I'm using) has a negative temperature coefficient! (Almost all known conductive materials have a positive temperature coefficient where the resistance goes up with temperature, moist soil, however, goes down making it somewhat of a rarity.)

So a few brain cells fired and I got the idea that I could put a little Microprocessor out there in my garden with a wire running in to the house and remotely monitor the soil. Then I figured that as long as I'm doing that, I may as well add other sensors too. Eventually (after even more brain cells fired) the idea blew out of control to become a Multi-Drop Network with an array of Addressable Microcontrollers each scanning an array of Sensors and reporting the data back to a master PC which will archive the data and graph it. What started as a single soil moisture measurement became an automated network measuring...

The ultimate trip is a slow transverse of the globe on very little money with lots of time. I've recommended two guides for this way of traveling in the past: The Practical Nomad (for budget travelers) and World Stompers (for those with almost no money). While both of these books still have some good tips in them, they are both a bit out of date and have been superceded by this great new information-packed volume from Rough Guides.

First-Time Around the World is the book I would write if I had to give my advice on how to travel cheaply and globally. It's smart, current, wise, and true. And worth reading even if you are only traveling for a few weeks.

A Map for Saturday

How it feels to vagabond

Don't watch this documentary unless you are ready to quit your job. It's about the joys and woes of long-term traveling. It's impossible to watch this fun film and not confront the fact that you are here instead of there, out on the road, soaking up the mysteries of the world, with all-you-can-eat $3 dinners and $5 rooms, backpacking around the world for a year, as the filmmaker himself did. This kind of vagabonding is more a state of mind than a state of motion. Something weird happens when you travel longer than 10 days, and that wonderful transformation (which no one can explain to their family when they return) is what this superbly written, fabulously edited, deeply personal and wonderfully likeable documentary is all about.

This film explores the mellow subculture of (mostly) young people who trek along an invisible international traveler's circuit. There's a kind of endless distributed global party going on every day of the year (plainly visible here), and to join it all you need is a ticket to any country and the address of the local hostel. I was part of this mind-set for many years and boy, does this film nail the peculiar delights of perpetual cheap travel. Not just the highs (everyday is Saturday, each new person an instant best friend), but also the lows (always saying goodbye, and loss of connection).

This DVD won't give you the how-to specifics of vagabonding. For that I recommend First-Time Around the World. A Map for Saturday works best as an orientation course, offering inspiration on why to tackle this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. It's the next best thing to having a good friend come back and tell you what really happens when you find yourself at the other end of the road.

How To Initiate Conversation

The hardest part of socializing, for many people, is initiating conversation. However, it is a big mistake to go about life not making the first move and waiting for someone else to do it [in conversation or anything].

This isn't to say you must always be the first in everything or spark up conversations with everyone you see. What should be said, though, is once you get good at starting conversations, a lot of other things will progress in the way you want; such as networking and your love life.

The Benefits

First thing is you should acknowledge why it is a good thing to be able to initiate conversations with strangers or people who you don't know well.

1. You're not a loner with nothing to do.

2. You look more approachable if you are comfortable approaching others.

3. Meeting new people means developing a network of friends or peers which leads to more knowledge and experiences.

You can only learn so much alone, and I'm sure you're aware of the benefits of learning from others. Being able to distinguish the 'good from bad' amongst a group of people will help in building a suitable network, or making a fun night.

Good Vs Bad

All people are good in their own way. Being able to have a good time with anybody is a worthy trait and something to discuss another time. However, if you have a specific purpose while in social situations you may want to stick with people who are suitable.

This means distinguishing between people who might suit you and your 'purpose' from those who probably won't. This can require some people-judging, which I am generally very opposed to. However, this does make approaching people all the more easier.

It helps to motivate the conversation if you really want to know this person. Also, you'll find your circle of friends and peers grows to something you really like and enjoy.

The Rules

I don't have many rules in this life, for conversation or anything; but when it comes to approaching strangers, there are a few I'd like used.

1. Be polite. Within context, don't be a creepy, arrogant loudmouth or anything. Acknowledge that you are in the company of strangers and don't make anyone feel uncomfortable. First impressions mean something.

2. Keep it light. Don't launch into a heartfelt rant or a story of tragedy. We're out to have fun.

3. Don't be a prude. This just means relax. This isn't a science and conversation isn't a fine art. Talk to people like you're already friends.

4. Be honest. Be yourself. People can tell.

Who To Talk To?

I'm of the ilk that likes to talk to everyone and anyone. Everyone has a story and good personalities. Some are harder to get to than others, but if you're on a people-finding excursion, like I usually am, then everyone is pretty much fair game.

That said, if you're out at a function and you want to build a network of people in your niche, you will want to distinguish those people from the others. Find the 'leaders' in a group of people or ask around for what you're looking for.

In a more general environment, like at a bar, you will want to do the same sort of thing. Acknowledge what you actually want and try to distinguish suitable people. Once you find someone, or a group of people, that you want to meet and talk to, hop to it.

Think of a few things you might have in common. What did you notice about their dress sense?

Confidence

The most important part of initiating conversation is, arguably, having confidence. It should be obvious that without any amount of self-esteem you will struggle. Having confidence in yourself and who you are makes this job very easy.

If you find yourself doubting your worth, or how interesting you are, make a few mental notes of why you are interesting and worth talking to. There is no question you are. You just have to realize that.

What do I do? What is interesting about it? What are my strong points and what are my weak ones? Confident people succeed because they play on their strengths.

Across The Room Rapport

This is rapport building without talking. It's as simple as reciprocated eye contact and smiles etc. Acknowledging someone else's presence before approaching them goes a long way to making introductions easier. You are instantly no longer just a random person.

As discussed in last week's How Not To Suck At Socializing article, there are things you can do to make yourself appear approachable. This doesn't necessarily mean people are going to flock to you. You'll still probably need to initiate conversations.

People notice other people who are having a blast. If you're that person, someone will acknowledge it and will make the 'across the room rapport' building a breeze. If you're that person that is getting along great with their present company, others will want to talk to you. This will make your approach more comfortable for both parties.

The Approach

When it comes to being social, the less analytical and formulaic you are the better. Try not to map out your every move and plan too much. Although we are talking about how to initiate conversation, these are really only tips. When it comes to the approach, though, there are some things you should keep in mind.

Different situations call for different approaches. Formal situations call for something more formal and relaxed ones should be relaxed.

At a work function, for instance, be a little formal and introduce yourself. People will want to know who you are and what you do right away. This isn't to say you should only talk about work, but an introduction and handshake is appropriate.

If you're at a bar then things are very different and you should be much more open to unstructured introductions. Personally, I don't like the idea of walking directly to someone to talk to them. It's too direct. I like the sense of randomness that comes with meeting new people.

However, if there is rapport already established, go for it. If not, take a wander, buy a drink and be aware of where people are. If there is someone you would like to talk to, make yourself available and not sit all night etc.

When someone is alone and looks bored, do them a favor and approach them. No matter how bad the conversation might get, they should at least appreciate the company and friendliness.

Briefly, Approaching Groups

When integrating with an established group conversation there is really one thing to know. That is to establish the 'leader' and introduce yourself to them. I mentioned that before, but here is how and why.

The Why is the leader of a group conversation is probably the more social and outgoing. They will more readily accept your introduction and then introduce you to the rest of the group. This hierarchy in a group conversation is much more prevalent in formal situations where one person is leading the conversation.

A group of friends out for the night is much more difficult to crack. This may even be another topic for discussion, but one thing I know that works is initiating conversation with a 'stray'. It sounds predatorial, but it works.

More often than not this occurs without intention, but if you do really want to get into a group of friends, your best bet is approaching one of them while they are away from the group and being invited into the group.

It is possible, like everything, to approach a group outright and join them. However, this is almost an art and requires another specific post.

Topics Of Conversation

Other than confidence, the next thing people who have trouble initiating conversations lack is conversation! So here are a few tips to get the ball rolling.

1. Small talk sucks. It's boring and a lot of people already begin to zone out when questions like, "What do you do?" or "What's with this weather?" come up. Just skip it.

2. Everything is fair game. If you are in the company of someone and a thought strikes you, share it. "This drink is garbage! What are you drinking?" "Where did you get that outfit?"

3. Opinions matter. This is any easy way to hit the ground running in conversation. Everyone has one, and when you share yours, another will reveal itself. The great thing about this line of thought is that you are instantly learning about the other person and what they like, dislike etc.

4. Environment. The place you're in is full of things to comment on. The DJ, band, fashions; start talking about what you see.

5. Current Events. Unless it's something accessible or light-hearted, forget it. Don't launch into your opinion on the war. If your city has recently put a ban on smoking inside venues, like mine has, ask what they think about it.

6. Speaking of smoking. If you are a smoker in such a city, you are in luck. Although there is the inconvenience of being ostracized outside to smoke, you are instantly thrust into a group of like-minded people. Consider this possibly the easiest forum for flirtation and new conversation.

Exiting Conversation

Although I'd like to write a full post on exiting strategies for conversations you don't want to be in, here are some tips.

The first thing is don't stay in a conversation you're not interested in. It'll show and will be no fun for anyone. Be polite and excuse yourself. You're probably out with friends, go back to them. Buy a drink. Most people will probably want to finish the conversation as much as you.

Likewise, you could start another conversation.

Move your power plugs around with Eubiq

Many devices may be going wireless or Bluetooth, but you almost always still need an electrical outlet to keep them powered up and chugging along. Not to mention the fact that you may have more electronic devices to plug in, than enough outlets to safely plug them all into.

So I can appreciate the simplicity of Eubiq, an electrical power outlet solution that provides an electricity-supplying track and separate power point plugs that can be jacked into the track wherever and whenever you need them. BOSTON -- A 50-ton bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month
had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that showed it survived a
similar hunt -- more than a century ago. Embedded deep under its blubber
was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped projectile that has given researchers
insight
into the whale's age, estimated between 115 and 130 years old.

"No other finding has been this precise," said John Bockstoce, an
adjunct
curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Calculating a whale's age
can be
difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses. It's
rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts say the
oldest were close to 200 years old.

The bomb lance fragment, lodged in a bone between the whale's neck and
shoulder blade, was likely manufactured in New Bedford, on the southeast
coast of Massachusetts, a major whaling center at that time, Bockstoce
said. It was probably shot at the whale from a heavy shoulder gun around
1890.

[fiezi] used a small tub, a lego mounted webcam, a small supply of milk and a bit of software to create the map and import it to moviesandbox.. the object is placed in the tub, then then it's scanned by the camera as the milk level is slowly raised (in this case, via spoon power) and voila: 3d map.

What is going on in America? We have a worldwide CO2 global warming crisis and American politicians are running around trying to throw money at coal-to-liquid production that as the graph shows, does nothing to reduce carbon emissions IF they can figure out how to sequester the CO2 and over DOUBLES if there is no sequestration. It is sacrificing the climate for, as Jim Kunstler says, the "happy motoring culture": Let the rest of the world drown, we will slice off every mountaintop and dig every hole to keep doing things the way we do now.

But GE's lump of coal with legs can only dance so fast- nobody has done carbon sequestration on a massive scale, and even if it works it is like methadone for heroin, substituting one addiction for another.

"This is the snake oil of energy alternatives," said Peter Altman, a policy analyst at the National Environmental Trust, an environmental advocacy group. "The promises are just as lofty and the substance is just as absent as the first snake oil salesmen who plied their trade in the 1800s."

Coal executives contend that the technology for converting coal to "ultraclean" diesel fuel for use in cars and trucks has been around for decades. Known as the Fischer-Tropsch process, the technology dates to the 1920s. It was used by Germany during World War II and by South Africa during the apartheid era, in both cases because the countries were blocked by international embargoes from buying oil.

SASOL, a South African chemical conglomerate, is the world's largest producer of coal-based liquids and operates a plant that produces 150,000 barrels a day.

"Greener and cleaner — we can do it, and we will do it," said John Baardson, president of Baard Energy, a firm in Vancouver, Wash., that is trying to build a $4 billion coal-to-liquid plant in Ohio.

But no company has built a commercial-scale plant that also captures carbon, and experts caution that many obstacles lie ahead.

"At best, you're going to tread water on the carbon issue, and you're probably going to do worse," said Howard Herzog, a principal research engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a co-author of "The Future of Coal," a voluminous study published in March by M.I.T. 450W Power Supply Roundup Boring, Useful

You'd think that little in life could be so extravagantly tedious as a 17-page roundup of ATX power supplies. HardOCP's unnervingly precise overview goes as far as to target models within a 50W range, bringing the piece close to being like a nerdy story from The Onion. But cards in the 450-500W band are the men of the moment when it comes to PC gaming, thanks to the ever-hungrier demands of the latest video cards.

Specifically, we're talking about console-spanking DirectX10 models which cost more than an XBox 360 and eat power like Tesla coils. At the meatier end of NVidia's 8800 series, for instance, cards require two hookups to the power supply and use, all by themsleves, about 180W. With the rest of the system needing a similar amount of juice, 450W is the recommended minimum, meaning that a look over the available models is timely and handy.

The short form is that HardOCP recommends the $87 FSP BlueStormII 500w. Avoid the Apevia ATX-AS500W-BL and the cheap allure of PowerTek's 500w, which is "the worst $20 investment a user could ever make."

Zonbu, the $100 Linux-based PC you can get if you sign up for a two-year online storage plan, isn't just a silent, low-power secondary home PC: this thing has hack potential up the wazoo.

While the Zon's a capable machine by itself, the $100 deal is designed for easy consumer operation by people who already have a main PC, and it isn't customizable as a result: you can't install your own software on it or do much of anything else to bugger it up. We've already seen radars come in handy when dodging impending attacks and avoiding accidents, but researchers at MIT are utilizing the technology to make sure our roadways and structures aren't pushed beyond their limits. A newfangled handheld device uses FAR-NDT (far-field airborne radar nondestructive testing) in order to "see through the fiberglass-polymer wrapping often used to strengthen aging concrete columns to detect damage behind the wrapping not visible to the naked eye." Furthermore, the technique can be executed from about 30 feet away and "requires no dismantling or obstruction of the infrastructure" in order to provide instant feedback. Unsurprisingly, creators are suggesting that it will be best used on bridges and piers which are typically difficult to carefully inspect, and while there's no word on when this stuff will hit DOT offices nationwide, current prototypes are panning out quite well.

Boeing 787 LEGO-like Building Begins, Kicks Airbus Nuts 3,110 Views

Boeing has started building their new flagship: the 787 Dreamliner. The cool thing about the 787 is that it only requires them to put together six big composite parts to build the final airframe and operators don't have to use huge tools and overhead cranes: all the parts can be slid along on the construction floor and put together like giant LEGO pieces. The six huge finished parts, the forward, center and aft fuselage sections, the wings, the horizontal stabilizer and the vertical fin, are going to be carried in their huge Dreamlifter from factories in Japan, Italy, South Carolina and Kansas. The Boeing Dreamlifter, as you can see in the gallery, is one of the largest cargo planes in the world.

According to Boeing, they will complete their first 787 in July 8, 2007 while everyone at Airbus are still scratching their heads wondering what the heck happened with their ill-fated and permanently delayed world's largets flying gadget. The 787 is the "fastest-selling airplane in aviation history," and even while I'm european, I'm happy to see it rolling out the factory for two reasons: one, because I like great airplanes and two, because those eurocrats at Airbus needed a kick up the butt. – JESUS DIAZ

Free tool offers 'easy' coding

A free programming tool that allows anyone to create their own animated stories, video games and interactive artworks has been developed.

Primarily aimed at children, Scratch does not require prior knowledge of complex computer languages.

Instead, it uses a simple graphical interface that allows programs to be assembled like building blocks.

The digital toolkit, developed in the US at MIT's Media Lab, allows people to blend images, sound and video.

"Computer programming has been traditionally seen as something that is beyond most people - it's only for a special group with technical expertise and experience," said Professor Mitchel Resnick, one of the researchers at the Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT.

"We have developed Scratch as a new type of programming language, which is much more accessible."

Child's play

The explosion in broadband connectivity has fuelled the growth of websites that offer rich media experiences, including video and animations.

"These days, kids interact with all kinds of dynamic things on screen but it is usually a one-way street - they are usually interacting with things that other people have created," said Professor Resnick, who also invented Lego Mindstorms, a robotics toolkit often used in teaching.

"With Scratch we want to let kids to be the creators. We want them to create interesting dynamic things on the computer."

The program works by making the act of creating a computer program more like building with Lego bricks.

"Kids make programs by snapping blocks together," said Professor Resnick, whose position is in part supported by the toy company.

Objects and characters, chosen from a menu and created in a paint editor or simply cut and pasted off the web, are animated by snapping together different "action" blocks into stacks.

"They don't have to worry about the obscure punctuation and syntax common in most programming languages," he said.

Each block contains a separate command, such as "move" or "play drum" and each action can be modified from a drop-down menu. Blocks can only be stacked if they fit together.

So, for example, if someone wanted to animate a cat walking across the screen they could modify the move block to tell the cat to walk forward 10 steps.

If they then wanted the cat to bang a drum as it walked, they could stack the play-drum block underneath, choosing a sound for the instrument and how long each beat should last.

Other actions, such as speaking, changing colour or triggering music, can then be added to complete the animation.

Mix and match

Scratch is inspired by the method hip hop DJs use to mix and scratch records to create new sounds.

"With Scratch, our goal is to allow people to mix together all kinds of media, not just sounds, in creative ways," said Professor Resnick.

"We want people to start from existing materials - grabbing an image, grabbing some sound, maybe even bits of someone else's program and then extending them and mixing them to make them their own."

Digital creations can then be shared on a site where users can watch other creations and even borrow elements from other Scratch projects to act as raw materials for their own.

"Kids like to share stuff on the web and I think that is a very strong element of Scratch," said Professor Nigel Shadbolt, of the University of Southampton and President of the British Computer Society (BCS).

He believes that it will be a useful tool for teaching children about computational thinking and enthusing "the next generation" of IT professionals.

"The thing that's very difficult for children encountering programming for the first time is that it is very unforgiving," said Professor Shadbolt.

"A program doesn't congratulate you for the 90% that you got right. It fails for the 10% you got wrong. So an environment where you are essentially assembling components that can only be configured in set ways takes some of that hardship away."

And for those that want to get stuck into something that looks more like traditional code there are sites like HacketyHack.

The site teaches children to code in a language called Ruby. There are seven free lessons, including one that allows them to develop a blog with just six lines of code.

"All of these environments are about getting kids to approach the world in a systematic and a structured way," said Professor Shadbolt.

Scratch is now available to download for free and works with both Apple Macs and Windows PCs.

A version of the tool is also currently being developed for the XO laptop, designed by the One Laptop Per Child Project.

Glass fishbowl bookends

Here we have an accident waiting to happen.

Now I don't know about you, but I've had bookends that have been rather unsuccessful in performing their one and only duty on a shelf. Forgive my overgeneralization here, but I'm quite certain that when bookends fail, they really fail. Because not only are they flipped on their sides by the cumulative weight of books that topple like dominoes when forced to stand upright on their own (lazy!), but they also usually shove all the adjacent knick-knacks on display off of the shelf and onto the floor.

This is already a sad sight to come home to when those cheap metal bookends are involved, so can you imagine the horror if these Glass FishBowl Bookends were thrown into the mix? The sewer system would be clogged with goldfish.

Wacom has busted out a new tablet for those not quite ready to drop $3,000 on a Cinteq (or $200 building their own), with its new "Bamboo" tablet device covering all the basics for a reasonable price. Of course, you won't get a built-in LCD, and it's not wireless, but you will at least be able to take advantage of Vista's various pen-based capabilities (it'll work just fine with a Mac as well). The device itself also won't take up too much room on your desk space, measuring about 7.8 x 7.3 inches although, as far as we can tell, it's not actually made of bamboo. If that's not too much of a deal-breaker, you'll be able to pick up one of these this month in Japan for ¥8,980, or about $75.

Wacom Bamboo Tablet To Make Mincemeat of Mice?

Wacom's "Bamboo" graphics tablet bridges the hinterland between their budget models and the expensive, high-end Intuos, and takes advantage of the integrated pen features, like handwriting recognition, that were incorporated into Windows Vista and Office 2007. Its 500 levels of sensitivity suggest a repurposing of the Wacom Graphire, but with a sleeker design and the addition of a "touch ring" to help manipulate one's computer dekstop.

At A6 size, it's probably too small for artists to get much out of, and it isn't wireless either, but it's aimed at folks looking for a more natural way to deal with desktop work anyway. Given how absolutely useless graphics tablets are, traditionally, as a general alternative to mousing, it'll be quite an achievement if this succeeds.

It'll be offered from May 18, and works just as well on Mac OS X 10.3 and up.

Child prodigies are rare in any artistic pursuit, but new music composition software is making it easier for parents and teachers to raise a little Beethoven.

Sibelius, a well-known maker of software that's used by musicians as well as composers on Hollywood films like Casino Royale, last week released the latest in a line of music software designed for children ages five to 11. With a game-like design and graphics, the software teaches children the basics of instruments, music theory, notation and composition, and then lets them create their own songs by dragging and dropping musically infused shapes, instruments, characters or animations.

It's so easy that a kindergartner can compose a song, say educators, and that's something they believe will go far to make music aficionados of kids. That shift could have ripple effects on an already transformed music industry thanks to the digital age. Instead of downloading pirated music, more kids may begin to create their own sounds, educators say.

$65 billion dollars to build a tunnel under the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska. Could you image traveling through a tunnel underwater for 64 straight miles?

Russia plans to build the world's longest tunnel, a transport and pipeline link under the Bering Strait to Alaska, as part of a $65 billion project to supply the U.S. with oil, natural gas and electricity from Siberia.

The project, which Russia is coordinating with the U.S. and Canada, would take 10 to 15 years to complete, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow today. State organizations and private companies in partnership would build and control the route, known as TKM-World Link, he said.

A 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) transport corridor from Siberia into the U.S. will feed into the tunnel, which at 64 miles will be more than twice as long as the underwater section of the Channel Tunnel between the U.K. and France, according to the plan. The tunnel would run in three sections to link the two islands in the Bering Strait between Russia and the U.S.

In the 10-15 years it will have taken to complete this project, that $65 billion will have surely risen. I've always found underwater tunnels interesting - the construction. If anyone has interesting links, feel free to share in the comments.
