Homeopathic remedies no better than placebo, study finds

SO all you people out there spending BILLIONS on that homeopathic remedy that is nothing more than a starch pill that was touched by alchahol that was taken from a vat that once held water that once touched arsenic.......
this is just further proof that your throwing your money away.
Of course most of those people are invested in this stuff mentally and cannot pull away and will make up excuses for why it works.....

heres the story

Cool white board calculator (and my first post created via email)

xThink Calculator

The xThink Calculator is a fully functional calculator for a Tablet PC user. You can use the xThink Calculator just as you would use a normal pocket calculator. The difference is, you enter numbers, operations and functions by writing on the tablet.

The xThink Calculator uses xThink's intelligent recognition technology to recognize hand-drawn, two-dimensional expressions correctly.

Click on our screenshots on the right to see the functions and operations supported by the xThink Calculator.

fuel cell battery alternative.... and blogging the blogs

http://tinyurl.com/7vh6d

thats a geekzone article on a new methane mini fuel cell, i found the article on engadget, which makes me wonder how many of these 'news' items are just bloggers blogging the blogs of other bloggers.

Mini Flying Drones with deformable wings

Military researchers working on flex-winged drones: Why is it that military researchers always seem to get the best toys? That certainly seems to be the case at the University of Florida, where military-funded researchers are working on a possible successor to the Air Force’s unmanned Predator planes. The new drones, inspired by seagulls, feature shape-changing wings, designed to let the planes swoop into tight spaces like alleys and apartment balconies. Motors in the wings enable them to flex at their “elbows,” executing a full upward or downward movement in 12 seconds. Project leader Rick Lind (pictured) also drew inspiration from the Wright brothers’ early planes, which included flexible wings controlled by cables.
(thats all from engadget: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000013055908/ )

here is the story they reference: http://tinyurl.com/9765f

its a very cool idea, but if they could make it ....faster? I mean 12 second to change wing shape... thats like an eternity.....

ah, its the browser

seems that my browser is what was causing issues.... switched browsers, issue resolved.

More on flying

http://tinyurl.com/8y9tr

New scieintist article, covers a cool new discovery about using modulated tones from pizio(sp?)electric plastics to create extra lift. If the numbers they are reporting are correct, this is not only something that will save planes from stalling but should increase weight capacity and fuel economy. 20% lift is HUGE, thats the kind of thing engineers work forever on.... and this guy found it quickly and easily.... my favorite quote:

Tests using a barely audible sinusoidal tone of about 400 hertz showed a 22% increase in lift, compared with a standard wing. This could translate into a few extra seconds of time for a pilot to boost a plane’s speed before it stalls, says Salmon. The simple tones worked best, though Salmon did experiment: “I can say that songs by the band Spiderbait are more effective than Radiohead’s.”

Bamboo and flooring and stuff about bamboo

Ok so here is a post at TreeHugger about Bamboo being used for flooring: http://tinyurl.com/c9l5r

and here are the flooring items they refer to: http://www.quickbamboo.com/ AND http://www.tukabambu.com/ and they are pretty cool.

The tree hugger page mentions that there are no bamboo plantations in the US.... I wonder how hard it is to get one rolling.... I wonder how profitable, i wonder what the margins are like and who would buy... i wonder who does buy the imported stuff now.......

Flying Cars Coming Soon

that is a link to a page put up by NASA. they have announced their next Centenial Challange. Basically they want personal easy to pilot air transportation and the prize is $250K
good luck.

Flying indoors

I feel that these should be so easy to recreate on the cheap.... except for the software but what the hell do I know....

this one came out first and was reviewed in MIT Technology review (a good magazine but a bit boringly written at times):
Here is the engadget blurb: http://tinyurl.com/89llf and then the home page: http://tinyurl.com/9kdwx
Basically it is a super light plane made to fly in tight spaces (small rooms, caves, forests) that uses two cameras and some intelligent software to avoid collisions all on its own.... course altitude is still controlled via joystick but left/right turns are onboard self controlled.

next up is a completely remote controlled super light plane that is WAY too expensive for what it is..... but you get a cool retro geekspy hard case with it:
again engadget first: http://tinyurl.com/8sqhr Hoem page second: http://tinyurl.com/d9muw
now it would be REALLY cool is the whole thing was POWERED by radio signals a-la RFID though i am not certain you can do that without pumping out enough RF to fry your house....

Anyway, there HAVE to be some home brew tiny remote controlled planes out there that are slightly larger/heavier but way cheaper.
