You've Gotta Fight for Your Right to... OLPC!
Today I read on engadget ("It's dot-com!") that the Classmate PC, Intel/Microsoft's competition to Nicholas Negroponte's One Laptop Per Child initiative (now called "XO"), is now projected to cost under US$300, which is a pretty tight price for a notebook. Since Intel's offering runs Windows (which is, sigh, a standard for some folks) and is backed by two multi-billion-dollar companies who are willing to subsidize the crap out of it, I think the Classmate actually has a pretty decent chance of succeeding against the cheaper, open-source, string-powered OLPC machine.
Here's what I'm wondering: In the largest sense, is this bad? Or good?
But let's back up a bit.
This one had me laughing out loud and thinking a wee tiny bit.....
